About the region

Everest from the hills of Solu

Pikey Peak (4,065 m) is a hilltop in the lower Solu region, south of the Everest National Park. From the summit at sunrise you see a line of peaks from Kanchenjunga in the east past Makalu and Everest to the Rolwaling and beyond, one of the widest views in Nepal.

The trek is short and road-accessible: you drive from Kathmandu, walk through Sherpa villages, yak pastures and rhododendron forest, and visit the Thupten Chholing monastery near Junbesi. There is no Lukla flight to wait for, and you meet few other trekkers.

Best for:
  • Everest views
  • Short on time
  • Quiet trails
  • A huge panorama

Everest, Makalu and Kanchenjunga from one summit at sunrise.

  • Sherpa country

Villages, chortens and the large Thupten Chholing monastery near Junbesi.

  • No flight needed

Drive in and out, so Lukla weather delays never touch your plans.

  • Quiet trails

Far fewer trekkers than the Everest region, with family-run lodges.

Questions

Pikey Peak questions, answered

Can I really see Everest from Pikey Peak?

Yes. On a clear morning Everest, Makalu, Lhotse and Kanchenjunga are all on the horizon. Sunrise from the summit is the highlight of the trek.

How hard is the Pikey Peak trek?

Easy to moderate. The highest point is 4,065 m and days are 5–6 hours. The early climb to the summit for sunrise is the hardest part.

Do I need a permit?

Pikey Peak is outside the national parks, so no park permit is needed. Local checkpoints sometimes ask for a TIMS card, and we carry what is needed. Nepal requires foreign trekkers to walk with a licensed guide arranged through a registered agency. All our treks include one.

How do I get there?

By jeep from Kathmandu to Dhap or nearby trailheads, about 8–10 hours. Some routes end at Phaplu, where you can fly back to Kathmandu or drive.

Pikey Peak or Everest Base Camp?

Pikey Peak is short, low and quiet, with a wide view of Everest from a distance. Everest Base Camp takes 12–16 days and brings you to the foot of the mountain. If you have a week, choose Pikey Peak.

Where do you sleep?

In simple family lodges in villages like Jhapre, Pikey Base Camp and Junbesi. Rooms are basic and warm meals are made to order.
