About the region

The valley next door to Kathmandu

Langtang is the valley the Tamang people call home, just 120 km north of Kathmandu. You drive to the trailhead, walk up through forest and villages rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake, and end below Langtang Lirung (7,227 m) at the monastery of Kyanjin Gompa.

From Kyanjin Gompa you climb Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) or Tserko Ri (4,984 m) for a ring of glaciers and peaks, and try yak cheese from a dairy started with Swiss help in the 1950s. It is the easiest big Himalayan region to reach without a flight, and the quietest of the classic valleys.

Questions

Langtang questions, answered

Where is Langtang?

In Rasuwa district, about 120 km north of Kathmandu, along the border with Tibet.

Do I need a flight to get to Langtang?

No. You drive to Syabrubesi in 7–8 hours by jeep or bus. That is one of the reasons it is great value.

Which permits do I need?

A Langtang National Park permit and a TIMS card. We arrange both before you arrive. Nepal requires foreign trekkers to walk with a licensed guide arranged through a registered agency. All our treks include one.

Is Langtang safe after the 2015 earthquake?

Yes. The villages and trail have been rebuilt, and many teahouses are new. Your guide will tell you the story of Langtang village.

How hard is the Langtang Valley trek?

Moderate. The climb is gradual, with 5–6 hours of walking a day, and the highest night is at Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m). The optional climb to Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri is the hardest part.

Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri?

Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) is a 3–4 hour round trip from Kyanjin Gompa with a great view. Tserko Ri (4,984 m) is a full, steep day with an even wider panorama. Your guide helps you choose by how you feel.

Can I combine Langtang with other treks?

Yes. The Tamang Heritage Trail starts from the same village, Syabrubesi, and you can also cross to the holy lakes at Gosainkunda and walk out through Helambu.
