Pro tips and important notes

Trail pro tips

  • “Dal bhat power”: rice, lentils and vegetable curry with refills, often cooked with vegetables from the family's own fields.

  • Try local food: ask your hosts for Tamang dishes such as buckwheat bread and potatoes with chilli pickle.

  • Stay hydrated: drink 2–3 litres a day (ginger-lemon-honey tea, boiled water).

  • Cash is king: there are no ATMs on the trail. Bring enough Nepali rupees from Kathmandu.

Essential teahouse notes

  • Homestay rule: you eat what the family cooks, at their table. It is the best part of the trek.

  • Mealtimes: tell your hosts in the afternoon when you would like dinner and breakfast.

  • Small extras: hot showers and charging cost a little and are not everywhere.

General information

What are the highlights of the Tamang Heritage Trail?

Homestays with Tamang families, the stone village of Gatlang, the hot springs at Tatopani and the mountain views from Nagthali (3,165 m).

Can I combine it with the Langtang Valley Trek?

Yes. Both start in Syabrubesi. Walk the Tamang Heritage loop first, then head up the Langtang valley to Kyanjin Gompa, for 12–14 days in all.

When is the best time to go?

October to December and March to May. December is cold at night but clear and quiet. Avoid the monsoon (June to August).

Homestays and culture

What is a homestay like?

You sleep in a simple room in a family house and eat with the family, usually dal bhat and local vegetables. Toilets and showers are basic.

How should I behave in a Tamang home?

Take your shoes off indoors, walk clockwise around chortens and mani walls, and ask before taking photos of people. Your guide will help with the rest.

What happens in an emergency?

Your guide carries a first-aid kit and knows the area well. The trail is close to the road, and our Kathmandu office arranges transport or a helicopter with your insurer if needed.
