About the region

A trek through Tamang village life

The Tamang Heritage Trail is a loop through the villages west of the Langtang valley, home to the Tamang people. You stay with families in places like Gatlang and Briddim, eat what they eat and see weaving, farming and village festivals up close.

The trail climbs to the natural hot springs at Tatopani and the meadow at Nagthali (about 3,165 m), with views of Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal and the mountains of Tibet. It starts and ends at Syabrubesi, so it combines easily with the Langtang valley.

Questions

Tamang Heritage Trail questions, answered

How hard is the Tamang Heritage Trail?

Easy. The days are 4–6 hours and the highest point is about 3,165 m at Nagthali. It suits families and anyone new to trekking.

What is a homestay like?

You sleep in a simple room in a family house and eat with the family, usually dal bhat and local vegetables. Toilets and showers are basic. It is the best way to meet Tamang people.

Do I need a permit?

Yes: a Langtang National Park permit, as part of the trail is in the park, and a TIMS card. We arrange both. Nepal requires foreign trekkers to walk with a licensed guide arranged through a registered agency. All our treks include one.

Can I combine it with Langtang?

Yes. Both start in Syabrubesi. Walk the Tamang Heritage loop first, then head up the Langtang valley to Kyanjin Gompa, for 12–14 days in all.

Are the hot springs open to visitors?

Yes. The hot springs at Tatopani are open to everyone. Bring a swimsuit and something to dry off with.

How close is it to Tibet?

Very close. The trail runs a few hours from the Rasuwagadhi border crossing, and on a clear day you see mountains in Tibet from Nagthali.
