About the region

The walk to the foot of Everest

The Khumbu is the home of the Sherpa people and the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A short mountain flight lands you at Lukla, and from there the trail follows the Dudh Koshi river to Namche Bazaar, the monastery at Tengboche and the high valleys below Everest (8,849 m), Lhotse and Ama Dablam.

The classic route ends at Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and a sunrise on Kala Patthar (5,545 m). The Gokyo valley, with its turquoise lakes and Gokyo Ri, is a quieter alternative, and the two can be linked over the Cho La.

Questions

Everest questions, answered

How hard is the Everest Base Camp trek?

Challenging, mainly because of the altitude. You walk 5–7 hours a day and sleep up to 5,164 m at Gorak Shep. No climbing skills are needed, but good fitness and a slow, well-planned climb are essential.

Where do Lukla flights leave from?

From Kathmandu, but in the busy spring and autumn seasons most flights leave from Ramechhap (Manthali) airport, a 3–4 hour drive from Kathmandu with a very early start. We confirm the airport and arrange the transfer when you book.

What if my Lukla flight is delayed?

Flights to Lukla depend on the weather and delays of a day or more happen. We build one or two spare days into your plans and can arrange a helicopter if you need to keep to a schedule.

Which permits do I need?

The Sagarmatha National Park permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. The TIMS card is not used in the Khumbu. We arrange everything. Nepal requires foreign trekkers to walk with a licensed guide arranged through a registered agency. All our treks include one.

How do you handle altitude sickness?

Our itineraries include rest days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, and we climb slowly. Your guide checks everyone each day and carries a first-aid kit; if symptoms grow, we go down.

Everest Base Camp or Gokyo?

Base Camp is the classic, with Khumbu Glacier and the sunrise on Kala Patthar. Gokyo is quieter, with turquoise lakes and a view of four 8,000 m peaks from Gokyo Ri. Strong trekkers can do both over the Cho La.

Can I see Everest from Base Camp?

Not really: the summit is hidden behind its own ridges from Base Camp itself. The best view of Everest is from Kala Patthar, above Gorak Shep, at sunrise.
