Trek milestones

Gokyo Lakes Trek highlights and why you will love this trek

Four 8,000 m peaks at once: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu above the lakes.

  • The turquoise Gokyo lakes

A chain of glacial lakes at around 4,700–4,800 m, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists.

  • Quieter trails

Far fewer trekkers than the Base Camp route, with small lodges at Dole and Machhermo.

  • Namche Bazaar and Khumjung

The Sherpa capital and a traditional village on your rest day, with Everest views above town.

  • Mountain flight to Lukla

A short, spectacular flight into the heart of the Khumbu.

Trekker suitability guide

Is this trek for you?

An honest checklist from our guides to help you decide if the Gokyo Lakes Trek suits your goals.

Suitability checklist

  • Physical demands and fitness: 4 to 7 hours of walking a day with a light daypack. Steady stamina for steep sections and one long descent.

  • Altitude and acclimatization: You sleep at 4,790 m in Gokyo and climb Gokyo Ri at 5,357 m. A rest day in Namche and short stages help.

  • Technical skill required: None. Rocky trails and some moraine. No ropes, crampons or climbing gear in the trekking seasons.

Why don't we include meals in our trekking package?

Trekker-first transparency

  • Freedom of choice and appetiteAppetite changes with altitude. Order what your body wants, from dal bhat to pasta, porridge or soup.

  • Direct support for teahouse familiesYou pay the lodges directly, so all food money stays with the local families who run them.

  • No package markupsAll-inclusive meal packages are often padded. Here you pay real menu prices for what you eat.

  • Dietary needs and allergiesVegetarian, vegan or gluten-free: order on the spot and get food made the way you need it.

Average daily food budget: plan on about $30–40 USD per day for hearty breakfasts, lunches, hot dinners and boiled drinking water or tea.

Pro tips and important notes

Trail pro tips

  • “Dal bhat power”: unlimited refills of rice, lentils and vegetable curry. The best fuel at altitude.

  • Go vegetarian higher up: meat is carried up without refrigeration, so we suggest vegetarian meals above Namche.

  • Stay hydrated: drink 3–4 litres a day (ginger-lemon-honey tea, garlic soup, boiled water).

  • Cash is king: there are no ATMs above Namche. Bring enough Nepali rupees from Kathmandu.

Essential teahouse notes

  • Teahouse rule: eat breakfast and dinner where you sleep. Lodges keep room prices low because of it.

  • Order early: order dinner around 5 pm and choose your breakfast time the night before.

  • Small extras: showers, charging and Wi-Fi cost a few dollars each higher up.

Practical field knowledge

Gokyo Lakes Trek guide: season, teahouses and altitude

Essential insights from our local trek leaders.

Best season and weather windows

Autumn (October to November): the clearest skies of the year and the most reliable Lukla flights.

Spring (March to May): warmer days and rhododendrons in flower between Namche and Dole.

*Winter (Dec–Feb) is clear but the lakes freeze and nights are very cold. The monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings cloud and frequent flight cancellations.

Teahouse accommodation and facilities

Rooms: twin rooms with foam mattresses; Gokyo's lodges sit right on the lake shore.

Heating and showers: dining rooms are warmed by a stove in the evening; hot showers cost a few dollars.

Wi-Fi and power: paid Wi-Fi cards and charging in most lodges; solar power is weaker higher up.

Food, nutrition and safe water

Dal bhat: rice, lentil soup, vegetables and pickle, with free refills.

Trail menus: garlic soup, Sherpa stew, porridge, noodles, pasta and ginger tea.

Hydration: drink 3–4 litres a day and treat your water; skip single-use plastic.

Emergency plan and helicopter evacuation

Rescue: our Kathmandu office coordinates helicopter evacuation with your insurer if it is ever needed.

On the trail: your guide carries a first-aid kit and pulse oximeter and knows the nearest helipads.

Insurance: travel insurance covering evacuation up to 6,000 m is required for every trekker.

Frequently asked questions for the Gokyo Lakes Trek

General information

What are the highlights of the Gokyo Lakes Trek?

Sunrise on Gokyo Ri with four 8,000 m peaks in view, the turquoise Gokyo lakes, the Ngozumpa Glacier, Namche Bazaar and quiet Sherpa summer villages.

What is the highest altitude on the trek?

Gokyo Ri at 5,357 m (17,575 ft) on day 8. You sleep no higher than Gokyo village at 4,790 m.

Gokyo Lakes or Everest Base Camp?

Gokyo is quieter and a few days shorter, with the lakes and a wider view of Everest from Gokyo Ri. Base Camp is the classic and takes you to the foot of the mountain. Strong trekkers can link the two over the Cho La.

Itinerary and flights

How long does the Gokyo Lakes Trek take?

Our itinerary is 12 days from Kathmandu, with 10 days on the trail. Keep one or two spare days for Lukla flight delays.

Where do Lukla flights leave from?

From Kathmandu, but in the busy spring and autumn seasons most flights leave from Ramechhap (Manthali), 3–4 hours by road from Kathmandu with a very early start. We arrange the transfer.

Can I combine Gokyo with Everest Base Camp?

Yes. From Gokyo you can cross the Cho La (5,420 m) to Dzongla and Lobuche, then continue to Base Camp and Kala Patthar. Allow about 16–18 days and some experience at altitude.

Trek difficulty and fitness

How difficult is the Gokyo Lakes Trek?

Challenging, grade 4 of 5, mainly because of the altitude. There is no climbing, and the stages above Namche are short to help you acclimatise.

How should I train?

Hill walks with a loaded daypack, stair climbing and steady cardio for 8–12 weeks before you go.

Altitude and health

How do you prevent altitude sickness?

A rest day in Namche, short stages above Dole, oxygen and pulse checks twice a day, plenty of fluids, and descending at once if serious symptoms appear.

What happens in an emergency?

Your guide carries a first-aid kit and pulse oximeter. If needed, our Kathmandu office arranges helicopter evacuation with your insurer.
