About the region

Nepal's most varied trekking region

The Annapurna Conservation Area is Nepal's largest protected area, and no other region packs so much into one trip. In a few days you walk from terraced Gurung villages through rhododendron forest into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a ring of peaks above 7,000 m with Annapurna I (8,091 m) at its head.

On the far side of the range, the Annapurna Circuit crosses Thorong La (5,416 m) into the dry, Tibetan-style landscape of Manang and Mustang and down to the temple at Muktinath. Every route starts from Pokhara, and the teahouses are the most comfortable in the Himalaya.

Short on time? The Poon Hill trek gives you a sunrise over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South in four or five days.

Best for:

  • The best teahouses in Nepal

Hot showers, warm dining rooms and good food on most nights, even high up.

  • Easy to reach

Pokhara is a short flight or a day's drive from Kathmandu, and trailheads are 1–3 hours further.

Questions

Annapurna questions, answered

Which Annapurna trek should I choose?

Poon Hill (4–5 days) for a short trek with a famous sunrise. Annapurna Base Camp (7–10 days) to stand inside the Sanctuary among 7,000 m peaks. The Annapurna Circuit (12–18 days) for the full journey over Thorong La. We help you choose by your days and fitness.

Do I need a permit for Annapurna?

Yes: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), and a TIMS card where checkpoints ask for it. We arrange both before you arrive. Nepal requires foreign trekkers to walk with a licensed guide arranged through a registered agency. All our treks include one.

How hard is the Annapurna Base Camp trek?

Moderate. The days are 5–7 hours with many stone steps, and the highest night is at Base Camp (4,130 m). No climbing skills are needed, but you should be comfortable walking several days in a row.

Is Thorong La dangerous?

Thorong La (5,416 m) is a long, high day but not technical. The risks are altitude and weather. Our itineraries acclimatise in Manang before the pass, and your guide decides on the day whether it is safe to cross.

Is there a road on the Annapurna Circuit?

Yes, jeep roads now reach Manang on the east side and Muktinath on the west. We use quieter trails away from the road where they exist, and many trekkers start by jeep to Chame to save days.

How do I get to the start of the trek?

All routes start near Pokhara. Fly from Kathmandu in about 25 minutes, or drive in 6–7 hours. From Pokhara it is 1–3 hours by jeep to trailheads such as Nayapul, Kande or Besisahar.

Can I trek Annapurna in the monsoon?

The lower trails are wet and views are often hidden from June to August. The upper Circuit, behind the mountains in the rain shadow, is drier, so it is the better choice if you can only come in summer.
