The south face of Kanchenjunga from the viewpoint near the South Base Camp.

  • The Sele La passes

A long high crossing between the two sides of the mountain, with views to Jannu and Makalu on clear days.

Trekker suitability guide

Is this trek for you?

An honest checklist from our guides to help you decide if this long, remote trek suits you.

Suitability checklist

  • Physical demands and fitness: 5 to 8 hours of walking a day for nearly three weeks, with big climbs and descents. Very good stamina is needed.

  • Altitude and acclimatization: Several nights above 4,000 m and a day hike to 5,143 m. Two rest days help, but previous altitude experience is a plus.

  • Technical skill required: None. Rough trails, moraine and high passes, but no ropes or climbing gear. Snow can lie on the passes in spring.

  • Trail comfort and accommodation: Basic lodges and village homes, simple food and cold rooms. Few showers and limited charging higher up.

  • Mental resilience: Long days far from roads, changeable weather and the chance of delays on flights and jeep roads.

  • Medical conditions: With heart or lung conditions or severe asthma, speak to your doctor before booking. Help is far away here.

Why don't we include meals in our trekking package?

Trekker-first transparency

  • Freedom of choice and appetiteAppetite changes with altitude. Order what your body wants, from dal bhat to pasta, porridge or soup.

  • Direct support for teahouse familiesYou pay the lodges directly, so all food money stays with the local families who run them.

  • No package markupsAll-inclusive meal packages are often padded. Here you pay real menu prices for what you eat.

  • Dietary needs and allergiesVegetarian, vegan or gluten-free: order on the spot and get food made the way you need it.

Average daily food budget: plan on about $25–35 USD per day for hearty breakfasts, lunches, hot dinners and boiled drinking water or tea.

Pro tips and important notes

Trail pro tips

  • “Dal bhat power”: unlimited refills of rice, lentils and vegetable curry. The best fuel for long days.

  • Go vegetarian higher up: meat is carried for days without refrigeration, so we suggest vegetarian meals above Ghunsa.

  • Bring snacks: lodges are far apart and menus short. Energy bars and nuts from Kathmandu help on long days.

  • Cash is king: there are no ATMs after Taplejung. Bring enough Nepali rupees for the whole trek.

Essential teahouse notes

  • Simple menus: expect dal bhat, noodles, potatoes and Tibetan bread. Choice shrinks as you climb.

  • Eat where you sleep: lodges keep room prices low because you take breakfast and dinner there.

  • Order early: small kitchens cook for everyone at once, so order dinner by 5 pm.

Practical field knowledge

Kanchenjunga trek guide: season, lodges, permits and safety

Essential insights from our local trek leaders.

Best season and weather windows

Autumn (October to November): the clearest skies and most stable weather for both base camps.

Spring (April to May): warmer days and rhododendrons in flower lower down; snow can linger on the passes early in the season.

*Winter brings deep snow on the passes and many lodges close. The monsoon (Jun–Sep) means heavy rain, leeches and landslides.

Permits and rules

Restricted area permit: issued only through a registered agency, with a licensed guide. We apply for it in Kathmandu.

Conservation area permit: the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP) is checked along the trail.

Group rules: we confirm the current group rules when you book.

Teahouses and village lodges

Rooms: simple rooms with thin mattresses and blankets; use your sleeping bag on top.

Facilities: few hot showers and limited, paid charging above Ghunsa. Bring a power bank.

Phone signal: patchy after Taplejung; some lodges have satellite Wi-Fi for a fee.

Food, nutrition and safe water

Dal bhat: rice, lentil soup, vegetables and pickle, with free refills.

Trail menus: noodles, potatoes, Tibetan bread, porridge and garlic soup.

Hydration: drink 3–4 litres a day and treat your water; skip single-use plastic.

Emergency plan and helicopter evacuation

Rescue: our Kathmandu office coordinates helicopter evacuation with your insurer if it is ever needed.

On the trail: your guide carries a first-aid kit and pulse oximeter and knows the nearest helipads.

Insurance: travel insurance covering emergency evacuation is required for every trekker.

*Help is far away here, so we turn back early if anyone shows signs of altitude sickness.
